Our Story

The Riley Park Shelter house was proposed in 1936 by Mayor James Allen and built in 1937 using Works Progress Administration labor, repurposed granite, and salvaged wood. Its design was inspired by a similar shelter in Bedford, Indiana, and it quickly became a central gathering place for community events and family traditions for over 85 years.

On December 28, 2022, tragedy struck when the historic building caught fire. The Shelter House was more than just a building—it was a gathering place for our community. Over the years, it hosted Greenfield Parks programs, family reunions, weddings, baby showers, and countless other celebrations.

The fire left the building a complete loss, and in the spring of 2023, it was demolished. While we mourned the loss of this beloved landmark, we were determined to preserve its spirit and history. For nearly two years, Greenfield Parks worked tirelessly with insurance, architects, and contractors to recreate what once stood.

On May 29, 2025, Greenfield Parks and the City of Greenfield proudly celebrated the grand opening of a new Shelter House—one that closely resembles the original structure. Inside, you’ll find a faux fireplace built with the granite salvaged from the 1937 building. Resting on that fireplace is the original dedication plaque, untouched since the fire, its torched surface now serving as a powerful reminder of our history and resilience.

The new Shelter House stands as both a tribute to the past and a space for the community’s future gatherings. We invite you to come and experience this beautiful blend of history and renewal for yourself.
